Contractor threatening collections after unfinished work

Hey BP - I hired a contractor for interior drywall and interior/exterior paint back in February. I've had issues since day one with quality and finally finished the interior. He then subcontracted the exterior paint to another individual who has done very poor work. The contractor tried to file a claim on the painters insurance but informed me the insurance company will not pay anything or help remedy the issue. The contractor is now telling me I owe the final balance or he will send me to collections. I have documented the process and proof of the poor work that has been done. Seeking advise as to how to approach this matter. Thanks!
