Possible opportunity to become a GC building specs

A bit of info about me. In the last 3 years, I have flipped three houses, have an accepted offer on a 4th, and am currently working on my 5th as we speak. I have done this on the side and am interested in getting into real estate full time eventually.

A friend of mine/my dad's is currently building spec homes about 75 miles from me. He currently has a moneyman and a GC of which he helps facilitate the projects. He is having issues with the GC and is getting fed up with the situation. He brought up the idea of me moving by him to become his GC - I worked for him in college and he trusts me and knows my work ethic.

The best part is that it is building specs. He has done over 15 deals in the last 18 months and the market by him is exploding for what he is doing.

What I am wondering is what I would need to do in order to become a general contractor? What is the extent of licensing, etc.? Does anybody have any suggestions?

Any input would be appreciated,

Thanks!

Each state (where you perform the work) has their own licensing requirements.
