Functional obsolesence

Have any of you had to remodel a house because it was functionally obsolete? We live in Lake Forest, CA, where a large portion of the homes were built in the 60-70s, they are split level 1.5-3 levels. The floorplans make no sense.

You enter mid level, which is a room that has one of the old style conversation pits that you step down to on one side , you can go downstairs to the kitchen/family room area which has sliders to the back yard, or from the main level you can go upstairs to the bedrooms.

The center level, that is street level is just strange. If it were a 2 story house it would work find, but... can't think of a solution for the strange layout. Any ideas? There's a lot of those and they need remodeling services, but... need ideas!!
