What to look for in a contractor?

Had a few bad luck with contractor and now searching for a new contractor in NJ. My main think is honestly and punctuality. What are your key things you look for? I am in search again and found a contractor that showed us a work that was previously done and it looks pretty good but his reviewed from 4 years ago are bad.

Length of time in the business. It's helpful to have someone who knows how to pull permits, order long lead items, or just manage low income workers.
