Contract estimates question

Hi all, my contractor is installing a new drywall ceiling and the joists are very crooked - more crooked than he anticipated (and I agree with him). Now he asking for more money. Can he charge more than the estimate that he gave me when the job started. The joists were visible then too. Should he have not take that into consideration? Can he ask me for more money? Thank you for any reply in advance.

You just said you agreed that they were more crooked than anticipated. And when he bid the job, of course he didn't check how straight the joists were. This mentality of hoping that he will just eat the costs on your job, is really toxic. Not to sound combative, but if you wouldn't be willing to write someone a check for nothing, don't expect other people to just give you things for free.
