Death in family solicitation

What are your thoughts on sending a letter/post card/card to someone who is getting ready to sell a home they inherited. The situation is my moms long time neighbor ~20 years passed away of old age, I didn’t know him personally but grew up just a few houses down and said hello daily on my walk home from school, normal neighbor stuff. He had no family but a close friend who visited often holds the estate, is it wrong or tacky to send some sort of something to let him know I’m available. My idea was a short letter with my contact info letter head, just saying basically

“I’m sorry to hear of Mr. John’s passing, I grew up just up the street, I know this is a hard time and you may not be ready to think about handling the estate but I’m here if you need anything at all, my condolences, etc.”

Also it’s been about a month since his passing. I’m not surfing the obit section or anything, just curious about this particular case.
