Possible to have license and not be full time agent?

Is it possible to get your real estate license and not actually want to use it to be a real estate agent? My main purpose would be to have access to MLS and get deals on foreclosures, short sales, etc. I work full time and wouldn't necessarily want to join a brokerage if possible, but I believe it's mandatory if I'm not mistaken. Thoughts?

It may be different in some states, but you usually have to hang your license with a broker in x amount if days. I also work FT and have my license. I'm not interested in running people all over looking for a home. I got my license for MLS data and for flexibility of getting inside of homes without waiting for agents. But I still have to place my license with a broker
