Can I get Your advice?

Hello there! I am a pharmacy student and my husband is a long-haul truck driver. Both of us have spent this last year reading and learning about how to get involved in real estate and how and where to begin. We are very much interested in buying rental properties and renting them out. Both of us have served in the military thus can use the VA home loan if need be. But not sure if that's the way we should go. We still have lots to learn and would LOVE any ideas and advice!

At this moment we have a few credit cards to pay off and do not have much in our savings account. Also, our credit score is not the greatest, and currently working hard to get both of our scores up! That being said, would it be best to first pay off the credit cards and then save up some money before we get started, or would investing in rental properties now be alright, or even investing with our VA home loan? Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thank you! :)
