Purchasing Multi-Units

I am a new investor to the real estate business and to this site and I wanted to know if someone could tell me how many multi-units I would need to purchase and rent out to be able to be financially independent and not have to hold a full time job doing something I don't like to do. My strategy is to start out purchasing multi-unit properties in nice areas to hold and rent out. I currently have a 2 unit (owner occupied) and may have found a beautiful 3-unit property in the historic district of the city. Any suggestions and/or opinions are greatly appreciated. Thanks everyone!
