LLC or NO? Keep in personal name or create LLC

Do I really need a LLC for my investment properties? I currently have 2 single family homes and a duplex in the works. I am a full time realtor 1099 commission only so I take advantage of write offs through my business and rental properties already. If I made a single member LLC with only my name in it, wouldn't that defeat the purpose because I would be held liable since I'm the only LLC member/president?

Otherwise I plan to have great coverage on insurance for each home and a umbrella policy instead of a LLC. Thoughts? LLC more structured for W2 person or those with multiple partners buying a deal?
