Agent involvement in off market deals

Hello all, I am a new investor and am slightly unclear about the role of an agent in off market deals. If I am represented by an agent but the seller is not will the agent still be paid by the seller upon closing? Would you say its better to go about making offers on off market homes without representation? How would this relationship work when acquiring a property from a wholesaler? Any other advice or knowledge on this subject would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
