Real-estate License Questions

Hello everyone, I know that a real-estate license can save you lots of time/money especially on bigger deals and also provide you with a whole slew of things that would be beneficial to learn and understand. My main question is how much it cost to keep\renew or what ever other associated costs their are to getting and keeping your real-estate license? The other dilemma I came across is that I've been reading that you must "hang" your real-estate licensee with a brokerage and I don't plan to work for anyone at the time being and would like to have it for my own personal use without being apart of a company? Any insight would be much appreciated and if I have anything mixed up or confused something just let me know. Thanks
