House Hacking in NY/NJ (within an hour of NYC & good schools)

We are a family of 5 looking to buy our first home through house hacking. We both work in the city and strong school districts are a priority. What are the best locations we should consider, within an hour of NYC and with a good school district? Considering a budget of around $1M (Can stretch to $1.2 if it makes sense)
