First property 4-plex

I am going to buy my first property in the next couple months, and my wife and I are planning to house hack a duplex-quad. Both our parents insist the price tag that goes with a 4-plex is too great of a risk to take starting out. My position is that if the property cash flows, it makes no difference what the purchase price is. Is a 4-plex inherently too much risk to start out with?
