Investing in an Expensive Market

Hello everyone, I am looking to get started in real estate investing within the next year or so, but the area I live in is an expensive real estate market. I've considered leaving to another market, but if I wanted to stay in my current area is there anything I can do to help myself find a good deal? I've considered looking through eviction listings or any foreclosures in my area to try to snag a good deal, but is there any other strategies that could help?
