What should I do to renovate my first property?

About some time ago I introduced myself on this site and since have gone a bit dormant. In this time though I've got with a real estate agent and with a VA loan I will be closing on a house soon in New Bern, NC. I already ordered flooring because that was the main eye sore in the place but as for the kitchen I am wondering what do most people opt for in counter tops? Also, what are some basic things I could do that won't cost much but increase the value of my house? I jumped in with some general knowledge and now I need to figure out the rehabilitation process so anything you guys can tell me will help. I'll try to be more active on the site that's for sure. The wheels are turning!

@Bryan Berrios

Hi Bryan. Congratulations on your house! A good way to figure what countertops and other finishes to put in your property is to look at some other houses on the market in your neighborhood if there are any. I have never put granite in any of my houses, but they would all probably appraise somewhere around 140,000 at the moment, and no house in this neighborhood that I have seen has granite. But if you are in a higher end market you will need to go with higher end finishes. Good luck, and have fun!
