Should I pay off my mortgage before investing?

So I live in NYC and currently don't own a home yet. However, I was wondering when I do buy a home should I pay my mortgage off first and  save or should I House Hack. Homes in NYC typically go for around 500k-1million and rent for 2700-3000. If I house hack I probably still will not live for free, however, my mortgage cost out of pocket will be low. Please bare with me. Thanks in advance for any feedback!
