What are some of the pros and cons of being a Realtor vs MLO?

I'm a newer realtor getting my nmls license and I've had a talk with a real estate broker, and MLO branch manager, and they both said that I have to pick one or the other whether I'm working in real estate or working on mortgages. I wanted to know is it possible that I work in both or should I just prioritize. My previous experience is in door to door sales for solar. I'm thinking that I self-generate leads and depending on what stage they are in the home buying or home selling process I can help them in one part and refer the rest. This gives me an in where previously I didn't.
