How to Begin? Rentals or Flipping?

Hi BiggerPockets Community, 

I am a beginner in Real Estate Investing. I love the idea and potential of being financially free through Real Estate. I am also getting a little tired of Corporate America.

My wife, Catherine, and me would be partners in the investing. We are currently debating how to start. I think rentals because of the potential cash flow without an intense focus or rush to flip and I can scale up as I fade out of the hamster wheel. Catherine thinks flipping to get the "big" win upfront and more short term. 

We do agree that some day, we would like to balance the portfolio with both rentals and flips. 

Help us BiggerPockets Community! From your experience and knowledge, it is best to start with either Rentals or Flips? Why?
