How to get my foot in the door

Hi

I live in Northern Ca and wanting to invest in real estate.  I currently don’t own but want to.  I have been educating myself for some time about real estate investing. Such an expensive market in Nor cal. Do I get my real estate license to start making money? 
Do I start out of this market just to get going? Thanks
