Finding your first Contractor

What strategy did you use in finding your first contractor ? Seems like yellowpages/online search is just a wild west because you don't know who you are getting and people are really cautious in giving you access to their prime contractor at least in my anecdotal conversations with a few people. 

So where did you start looking ? As an newbie in house BRRRR I dn't think I have the pull to attract strong contractors just based on my vision.
