Loans Process for Beginners

Hi everyone, I am about to start the Pre-approval process for home loans and just had a couple of quick questions.

Whenever I try to apply for a loan online, I get asked the very specific question "what is the zip code or city of the property?" But, what if I am still looking around for properties and don't have a specific zip code or property in mind? Would I have to be prepared with a property that I am ready to make an offer on?

I was just wondering how everyone else did their Pre-approval process?

Would it be more efficient to actually go to the bank in person or just call one bank after another?
