Priced-Out in City I live in - buy a rental in a cheaper town?

Hello to all! I'm new to BiggerPockets and would love some advice.

We are currently priced out in the city we live in. A few options;

- Take the leap and buy something you don't love, just to get into the market

- Continue renting in current city, and purchase in cheaper community (would mean about 3-4 hours travel to get there)

The biggest concern is maxxing out on the over-priced city, would then limit any future property purchases.

Anywho, any advice or help for this newb would be great! I'd love to get out of the rental world and start building some equity.

Thanks so much for your time...much appreciated :)
