House Hack – Northern California
Hi There – My husband and I found the perfect home w/ a mother-in-law unit that we were excited to rent out to help subsidize our mortgage. Turns out the unit isn’t permitted, and the added square footage will not be included in the appraisal. We are still interested in buying the home and renting the unit. What are some precautions we should look out for? Is it technically legal to rent out a unit if it’s not permitted? How much time and money would you estimate it would take to try to get the addition permitted? Would we have to re-do all previous work completed? We are rookies, so any insight from the pros would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance, Lola
