How to market to SOI without damaging relationships

I've heard countless people talk about the value of their SOI, but I'm just getting started, so my SOI primarily consists of my friends and some colleagues. These are relationships that I don't want to damage... I don't want to end up being one of those guys whom when they see my name, they think, "Oh great, not him again. What's he want from me now?" I've also known people whom I considered to be friends until they seemed to only want to be my "friend" because they wanted my money, and I don't want to end up turning into someone like that. As additional context, I'm somewhat of a religious leader among my friends, so I have additional reasons to not want to damage trust or lose their respect or cause them to feel like I'm leveraging that trust to make money. 

Am I totally off base in my thinking here?
