FIrst home, New Construction

I've found an inexpensive lot, that seems like it would be good for a starter home. I haven't bought it yet, because I want to get some more info about the building process. This would be our first home, and we are only planning on living there for a couple of years, once it's complete. Any advice or even some steps to go by in regards to new home construction and setting yourself up for success when it comes time to sell down the road?
