How to Figure Out Whether the Market is Good in a Given Area?

Hi! Total newbie here. I'm wondering what are some of the best ways to figure out what the market is like in an area (the title), and how to discover up and coming locations? 

Note: I'm traveling for the indefinite future, so any tips on how to do this remotely are greatly appreciated!
