Need advice on where to invest

Hello,
I have a question and need some guidance. First, I am refinancing my home and investing 20k, but don't where to start. I have listened to many podcast, but feel that I still lack the knowledge to make a move in investing. I really need help or a book to read so that I can pursue my goals. Anything will help and also I live in California, but willing to invest in other states.
