Choosing Your Strategy - Newbie

I'm full aware that whatever backs up into your goals is what you should be aiming at. I know that my market also plays a hand in what is selling/cash-flowing etc. However, if I'm currently not in a financial position to immediately build wealth through rental income and sustainable commercial real estate - where do I start? Wholesaling seems obvious to me coming from a startup building, sales and marketing background but am I complicating things by thinking I need to start there? Should I just find a way in to my end-goal now or work my way up?
