Becoming a Property Locator for an Investor. Good way to start?

I am new to the world of real estate investing and am currently just in the education phase. I want to step it up and start gaining real world experience while getting paid at the same time. I have been very interested in becoming a property locator for an experienced investor. That way I can learn the process, along with getting paid for my services. I have found a few ads on craigslist from investors looking for this kind of help, but they are rather difficult to find. I have been considering researching investment companies and just calling them to offer my services. Has any one else started their real estate career this way? If so, would you recommend it to a newbie? How would you recommend finding a good investor to learn from?
