Hello all. If I see a house that's boarded up what the best ways to try and find out status of where it's at in foreclosure or pre-foreclosure etc.? Thank you very much.

@Beau Alesi have you searched county records to see who own the property? you would find this on the property appraisers site. If it is not bank owned then you would want to do a county records search to see if there is a foreclosure suit pending. if it is bank owned then they will eventually list it for sale but you might have to wait for that.

Tyler appreciate the response. I only called the town receivers office and they gave me the bank info. Isn't that the same as the county record search? If not how does one access county records? What do you mean " find this on property appraisers site"?. What is that?

I am not sure if the receivers office is the same thing as records. I am not familiar with the term receivers office. Google search for your County property appraiser. This is a public site that information on every property in the county. Information like taxes, last time it sold and for how much, Who is the current owner and often times the address of record for the owner if it differs from the property address. On this site you can also get the legal description and parcel ID or tax ID (which are the same but different states call it different things). You can use the property owners name, legal description, or parcel ID or combination of these to search the county public records. Again google search for county official records or registrar of deeds. Search for the property with the info you obtained for the appraiser site. You are looking for a lis pend document type this is a document recorded in public record that states a lawsuit is pending. Almost all information about property is public record and can be found on these 2 sites. If your county charges to view the documents recorded then you can probably go to the recorders office and search and view there for free.

So just got this email back from county. Mine is bottom most.

Suffolk County does not have a centralized assessing unit like others do. We have ten townships and they assess and tax individually. The Suffolk County Comptroller does not take over taxation issues until a property is past due on its taxes. For property assessment values, some town Assessors have the assessment rolls on their websites. Also, some Receivers have their bills online.

Hello Larry. So I'm new to property investing and was told that I can contact( or go to website) of county appraisers office, which is public info, and get information on property such as last time sold and how much, taxes, owner info etc.

Does Suffolk county have a site like this if not where could I get this information?

Sounds Like you need to check with the township then.

I'm thinking this is what they offer.

This is where you can search for the Lis Pen.

Again thank you so much. So I did search right before you posted and got linked to this info for the house next to me. Not sure exactly what to make of this info but I believe this is what I need to see.

This info is showing what deeds and mortgages have been recorded against the property. This should get you going.

Last thing. so this pic/info is of a boarded up house. I really don't know how to interpret the info but it does seems as though it's not in foreclosure which is surprising as it abandoned and boarded up. The town did tell me the bank is BFI but it doesn't look that way. It does seem like they paid off mortgage. Guessing that;s what satisfaction of mortgage is. Thanks a lo.

Yes a Satisfaction means the loan is paid off. The grantee on the deed is the property owner now. So since the loan is paid off that is why you cannot get info from the bank. Figure out what township this is and look up the tax record for the property. That should give you the mailing address of the property owner.

Tyler thanks for taking the time and being so kind.
