Advice is good as gold and im gold poor
Hi my name is Charles Stubblefield and i have been looking into to several ways to be able to retire in about 10 years.
A little about me . I started out in restaurants when i was 14 . My family never had a lot of money so when i started working i said forget school i was going to make money, so i quit school started working full time and spent more time partying and chasing women than worrying about saving money. But as i got older i stayed in the restaurant game and became a GM for a fast food chain and did that for 20 years. I had a pretty good 401 k build up when dummy me went in with a partner and thought it would be a good idea to open a bar.
Well that was the worst experience of my life . Not only was i working at least 50 hrs a week at the restaurant now i was closeing a bar at 2 am and having to get up and go to work the next morning and still losing my *** on the bar . So i had to file bankruptcy to get out of that mess and used all my 401 k to boot.
So now i have been researching on ways i can retire and real estate has my interest. I dont have hardly any cash but unfortunately my mother passed away back in may leaving me and my sister her house . So i have some fixing up to do on it and it will be ready to either sell or rent . All so my house will be payed completely off in about 5 years so i all so have that . So now im just trying to figure out my plans of action and what check list i need to be working on to get everything going. I am sorry for such a long post but i wanted anyone that was interested to sort of know my back story.
Thank everyone that reads this and replies back to me.

I think your biggest first step should be to change your mental model of yourself and your story. You came from a particular scenario, worked hard, took a big risk, and learned a lot along the way.
Unfortunately, you didn't get what you wanted out of taking that risk. And it sounds like it was a horribly painful experience at the time.
Fortunately, it isn't over yet!
As you work on upgrading your mental model and your story, you can work on your network and knowledge! Go to local real estate networking events as much as you can. This is so you can learn about the business, meet others, and learn how they've found success. Listen to the BiggerPockets podcast and other real estate podcasts every day. Get your hands on the various impactful books out there (Rich Dad Poor Dad!)
Do those things and you'll see a clearer road ahead of you.
