How exactly should I go about starting out?

Hello,
I'm a very young and driven college student. I want to start investing in real estate but I am so lost as to how to go about it. I know it will be hard work, and I need to educate myself. However I would just like to know how some of you got started, how hard it was, and also how long it took to start really seeing a profit. I am willing to put in the hard work, research, and learn.
