Alaska Laws - Help Please

Michelle Haruzi
Posted

Hello,

We would like to buy and sell homes in Alaska. We are new to Real Estate in general and new to Investing. I’m having a hard time interpreting the first line in this Alaska law. Wondering if we can get someone’s professional opinion (I understand you may not be a lawyer or may not know Alaska laws.) Just looking for an experienced person who understands their own State Laws and therefore might be able to understand ours as well. Thanks in advance for your help.

Article 2. Licensing

Sec. 08.88.161 License Required.

Unless licensed as a real estate broker, associate real estate broker, or real estate salesperson in this state, a person may not, except as otherwise provided in this chapter,

(1) sell, exchange, rent, lease, auction, or purchase real estate

I know that it’s not illegal for a non-licensed person to buy their own home. What is this actually saying? Also, I know that our LL (we currently rent) is not a Realtor and yet I know she’s not breaking the law by renting to us. I feel dumb for asking what this means but I just cannot wrap my mind around a person who’s not licensed cannot SELL or RENT or PURCHASE real estate.
