Getting started in Property Management

I'm looking into buying my first multifamily unit this year, and because I'm an eternal DIY-er, I want to manage it myself, especially if it's only 2 units or so. I've been a landlord for roommates before, so I have some experience. I would like to get a job with a property management company to see the ins and outs of this side of the business. Any suggestions of how to accomplish that? I've applied to several places, playing up my take-charge attitude and my willingness to work long hours, along with my retail and entertainment management experience, but no luck. Any tips on how to break into this field?
