A Canadian Owning Real Estate in the United States

I am a newbie, considering multi-family real-estate and flipping single family homes in the near future. I was referred to Bigger Pockets as a resource to helping me get started. I just started the Ultimate Beginner's Guide and I find that some terms are very much related to the United States.

My question, is...is it possible for Canadian citizens to buy-and-hold properties in the states? Are there any forums that I may be referred to as to understanding the pros and cons of such an endeavor?
