Balancing retirement contributions/ investment capital

Hey community! I was interested in everyone’s opinion about balancing retirement funds ( 401k) (Roth Ira) with saving capital for investments. I don’t want to put money into retirement vehicles only to continuously pull it out to invest in real estate. But also understand the value of compound interest and low cost index funds. Any recommendations? Thanks!
