How to Learn About Local Zip Codes

In trying to decide where to invest, how should I go about learning about specific zip codes or neighborhoods within a specific zip code? How do I know to avoid a specific area or zip code? Some places look good on paper or even when you drive through them, but they could be war zones, or vice versa. What resources do/did you use?
