General Contractor Needed Starting Out?

Hi,

I'm a new member of Bigger Pockets, but I've been passively investing in residential and commercial real estate for the past 6 years. I also have a background in residential and commercial appraisal, but I'd eventually like to start doing my own deals & remodels in multifamily using the BRRRR method. I don't have much experience in construction though so I wanted to ask what the best methods are of going about the remodeling for the first time.

Specifically, would it be best to hire a general contractor, or could I hire out subcontractors for each part of the remodel?  Of course I'd like to limit costs, and I know a good GC can be very expensive. Any ideas on the best way to estimate remodeling costs would be greatly appreciated as well.

Thanks!
