Leads: Preforeclosure List

Hello Everyone,

I am getting started into Real Estate specifically into wholesaling. I am trying to get preforeclosure leads and according to everything I read, it always says contact your local county. I contacted my local county register of deeds (Wayne County, Michigan) and the receptionist said that mortgage companies don't file a notice of default or notice of trustee sale and it's not something that mortgage companies normally do. In addition, she mentioned that i might be able to attain NOD or notice of trustee sale, if I contact the mortgage companies. 

Do mortgage companies provide preforeclosure information? and if so, do they charge?

If mortgage companies don't, how would I be able to gain access to NOD and notice of trustee sale?

There are companies who sell these leads.  Sometimes the list may be bit outdated and some may be very fresh.

The list provider gives name, address and additional information; based on service and costs
