House hacking using the va home loan question

So backstory, this deal is one my friend found, and he’s curious what BP thinks (he is not yet a member even though I tell him everyday to make a free account).

So he lives in a townhouse and his landlord owns three in a row, all connected, under the same roof. There are two others connected that are not owned by this landlord. My question is, can my buddy use his va home loan to purchase the three that are connected as a 3 unit? Does the va home loan allow this?

Thanks for the help.
