Does Anyone have Experience with Condo House-Hacking??

I currently live in San Diego where SFR and 2-4 unit properties are out of my budget at the moment. I have looked at a good amount of properties and not a lot will even pencil out and if they do, they are in areas where I am not comfortable moving to. I have plenty of buddies from college that I could room with which gives me a great opportunity to house hack. Condos are cheaper and close to my budget but also have fees and "rules" that come with living in an HOA.

I was wondering if anyone in the BP community has successfully house hacked a condo and what their experience was like. 

Any advice or guidance on this would be huge!
