Live in a lease and buy for Investment?

Hi everyone - I am new here. I am done with spending money in rents so I was thinking to buy a property. However the area I really like to live is way overpriced and I cant afford buying a place I like. I was thinking to buy a cheaper property in a different area, rent it out so I can get monthly income and continue renting a place in the area I like. Thoughts?
