Home owners insurance and taxes in escrow

I’m just getting my feet wet in this process. BRAND BRAND NEW! Is it better to escrow your homeowners insurance and taxes monthly or pay them separately?

Are the rules different depending on whether it’s an investment property or not? 

I’m reading a multitude of ways to go about this but would like to hear from you?
