Basic overview of real estate investing?

I have been reading the BP blog/forums and listening to the podcast almost daily. I've read business books but I have yet to find a resource that will go over the steps of real estate investing. I have had a hard time getting a base knowledge to build off of. Do you have any advice on the topic or maybe a book that helped you when you were beginning?

If you have been hanging around BP I'm surprised you haven't found this info.  It seems that you may be in analysis paralysis

step 1: pick a market

step 2: get preapproved for a loan

step 3: start analyzing properties WITHIN your budget

step 4: start viewing potential properties and buy one.
