Auctions Foreclosures Huds

For those of you experienced in foreclosures, are auctions the main way to obtain/purchase a foreclosure? What exactly are HUD homes? I am planning to attend an auction as an observer to start to get the feel of them. I read what the auction indicated I need to bring; it said to bring funds and also an ID. Do you need to actually bring enough funds to purchase a home at auction, even if you are just going to observe? Thank you.
