How to learn about your real estate market?

Hello Biggerpockets,

I've been using www.bestplaces.net and it's been giving me a general idea of the real estate in the area. Is there any other approach I could use to having a better understanding of the local real estate market? Maybe a popular real estate book that teaches this subject?
