Newbie looking for some pointers in Schenectady, NY

I am a newbie just starting out.  I live in the Scotia, NY area and I am a retiree with a disability looking to get into the Real Estate marketplace in my area.  Would like to talk with people to see what it takes to start to build a profitable rental portfolio or flipping houses in this area.  I have a little something to work with and my son would like to partner me. My son has many skills for flipping and I am good with the figures and design.  I would be interested in also looking into a Real Estate license program.  Looking for some pointers for starting out.
