Getting Started With Direct Mail?

I'm trying to get my feet wet and get my first rental or flip in early 2018.  Have some properties I've looked up and am wondering how to contact the owners.  Is direct mail the easy way to go?  Is there a standard letter people use for contacting a property owner?  What should I include in a direct mail letter?  Am I going about this the wrong way?  Appreciate any advice I can get.
