Looking for start up help.

I am just getting started with Real Estate Investing and need some help and advice. I am looking to secure my first deal, however I have some challenges in front of me with upfront money and credit. What should I look for when checking with hard money lenders? I have no savings or 401k to tap. I am completely open to starting from the ground up with minimal deals in an effort to build trust and a financial foothold.
